DAY 24: Titus Turner: Christmas Morning

Day 24...! Happy Christmas Eve..!

... Titus Turner croons like the best of 'em. I love the way he sings the word "morning" in parts of this.. Like.. in the "mewwwnin', baby. This song has been on a few comps I think, and also available on the Titus Turner "Classics" cd..

Hope everyone is having a fab x-mas...!

enjoy.

This was one of my favorite songs from childhood. We used to LOVE the Muppets album.. Which was all songs taken from the "John Denver & The Muppets: A Christmas Together" TV Special, (which you can download in 6 parts over on youtube...)

This part where Miss Piggy sings this one was basically the childhood equivalent of going to see Iggy Pop for me.

DAY 22: The Tryfles - Gloria (In Excelsis Deo)

Day 22...! WOW!

Another track of the "Midnight Christmas Mess" comp.. Yeah, I already posted one from this compilation, but this one is too good to keep off the list.. The Tryfles were a mid 80's "garage-rock revival" band from NYC.. Here they do a great version of the traditional "In Excelsis Deo", but cleverly 'mashed-up" (yes, there were mash-ups before this recent age of MP3J's ) with a song you will surely recognize... You'll find more info on The Tryfles here.

enjoy....!

DAY 21: Happy SOUL-stice...! Count Sidney & His Dukes - Soul Christmas

Day 21..!

So today is the 1st 'official' day of winter.. Or, also known as, Winter Solstice...
This amazing tune by Count Sidney & His Dukes is one of those ones you can't help but shake yer ass to. Okay, well maybe that's just me & my mom after a few eggnogs. In any case, here ya go.

ALSO, upon doing the image search on this one.. I found a copy of this sweet '45 up on eBay... So if you're still wondering what to get me for x-mas.. well.. ahem.

enjoy.

DAY 20: Pearl Bailey - Five Pound Box Of Money

Day 20..!

If you're like me this year, the x-mas budget is as tight as Santa's belt after eating all those cookies.. Pearl Bailey is cuttin right to the chase here with her Christmas list. Money. Make it a 5 pound.. No, better make that, a 10 pound... Box of money.

Also, I said in a previous day that I wouldn't post "Baby It's Cold Outside".. but you gotta give it up for this version done by the extraordinary Pearl Bailey along with Oran "Hot Lips" Page... .. We got hit with about 10"'s of snow from last night through today. And it IS f'n cold outside.

So today ya get a 2 'fer.
enjoy.

Day 17...

WOW it's getting cold...! Windshield today is -2°F. I coulda posted something like "Baby It's Cold Outside".. but really where's the fun in that.. Here The Replacements give us "Bundle Up", really just a cover of a Hank Mizell tune, "Jungle Rock".... with Westerberg lyrics.

"The elves and Rudolph they was a-shootin' up junk

Not a creature was stirrin' 'cause they all was drunk."

so BUNDLE UP.. and enjoy.

DAY 16: Johnny Guarnieri & Slam Stewart - Santa's Secret

So here we are.. Day 16..

Santa has a little secret.. And Johnny Guarnieri wants to fill us in.. I won't divulge any information here. You'll just have to listen & hear for yourself. Let's just say that Santa's "sack" isn't just filled with toys...

enjoy!

P.S... i found a cute little flash animation of this song (covered by Squirrel Nut Zippers...) It'd be much better with the original, but you can find it HERE.

DAY 15: Christmas - Oh Holy Night

Blazin through 'em... !
here we are at Day 15...

Back in 1983 a few local Boston bands got together & made this little 5 song holiday EP..We all know of course, SSD.. And then there's Jeff & Jane Hudson, AKA, The Rentals.. The band "Christmas" would later go on to form Combustible Edison.. I just love Boston Rock History.

... I couldn't just give you one song , so I also uploaded the entire album to a zip

ENJOY.

DAY 14: Yard Trauma - Christmas Tyme (Baby)

good morning!
it's day 14..!

today, a track off the "Midnight Christmas Mess" compilation. (No, it has nothing to do with the fact that The Mess Me Ups are playing tonight @ Charlie's Kitchen.... well, mayyybe....)
Anyways! The band Yard Trauma features Lee Joseph, who runs Dinonysus Records... Killer fuzzzzzz guitar on this one.. their x-mas tune..."Christmas Tyme (Baby)"...

enjoy!

BONUS! Rockin' stockin' stuffer! Huey "Piano" Smith - 'Twas the Night Before Christmas (full album)

This one's too good not to share.. Here's a .zip file of the full 'Twas The Night Before Christmas album by Huey "Piano" Smith...

DAY 13: Huey "Piano" Smith - Doing The Santa Claus

Day 13..!

New Orleans born Huey "Piano" Smith was probably best well known for his hit "Don't You Just Know It"... But in 1962, along with his band, The Clowns, (as well as some help from Dr. John)... recorded one HELL of a rockin' x-mas album..

so let's do a little dance called the Santa Claus...!

ENJOY!

DAY 11: J.B. Summers - I Want a Present For Christmas

Hello Day 11...! Here's one off a great comp that I can't recommend highly enough..

Mark Lamarr is a DJ from the UK who has an exquisite taste for awesome old Rock & Roll and R&B.. He put this comp out a few years back & it's been one of my faves for the last couple of holiday seasons.

Here's a track from J.B. Summers,

DAY 10: Rufus Thomas - I'll Be Your Santa

Day 10 - and here's another sexy tongue-in-cheek holiday tune...

Rufus Thomas, born in Memphis, did some records with legendary SUN RECORDS, as well as STAX... He is probably most well known for penning "Walking The Dog", which has been recorded by everyone from the Stones to Green Day.

Here's his x-mas song, "I'll Be Your Santa"... a funky little tune with dirty little undertones. You'll find this on the compilation "Christmas in Soulsville" (Stax) .....Another highly recommended holiday offering.

enjoy.

DAY 8: The Cannibals - Christmas Rock & Roll

Good morning! It's Day #8...!
LET'S break away from these tame little R&B ditties and get back to some punk.

The British band The Cannibals, aka "Mike Spenser & The Cannibals" recorded this little x-mas 45 in '86... i scored a copy off eBay last year... a garage stomper, no doubt.. if you like the piano part of Led Zep "Rock & Roll" you will dig on this...

it's nifty novelty packaging (comes in a boot-shaped sleeve) makes it a pain to organize with the vinyl but OH, so worth it..

and, oh looky.. there just happens to be a copy on eBay right now..

lucky for you, I'm givin it to ya here for free.

DAY 7: The Marshall Brothers - Mr. Santa Boogie

Good morning Day 7..!

Today, another sweet R&B track, delivered to us by The Marshall Brothers.. They are linked to The Ravens & The Ink Spots.. This one's a toe tapper that has been on a few different comps, including the one above, one of my favorites: "Papa Ain't No Santa Claus, Mama Ain't No Christmas Tree"

ENJOY!

DAY 6: Bobbie & Boobie - Cool Cool Christmas

HELLO Day 6...!

Today, a fine R&B gem, a la "Bobby & Boobie"...aka, Bobby Nunn, who was one of the original Coasters.. Other than that, I don't know anything else about this tune except it was on this "Christmas Ville USA" comp.

It snowed last night..! Which made me remember, December is COLD. But why be COLD, when you can be COOL...????

DAY 5: Wild Billy Childish & The Musicians of the British Empire - Dear Santa Claus

Day 5... here we have a sweet track off the Billy Childish "Christmas 1979" album..

This song is actually sung by Billy's wife, aka "Nurse Julie", also the bass player in this band.. I don't know much about her.. She played in an all girl band called the A-Lines, who put out a record back in '03..

DAY 4: Sugar Chile Robinson - Christmas Boogie

OMG I love this song. Frank "Sugar Chile" Robinson, born in 1938 in Detroit, became a piano virtuoso at about age 5.. There's some great, old cool newsreel footage and a lot of other stuff with him on youtube.. Later in his life he would eventually give up music for acamdemia, becoming a psychologist.

This was recorded in 1950 (c/w 'Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer') ... Good luck finding it.

me & my mom love dancin 'round the tree to this!

ENJOY!

Thursday, December 3, 2009

DAY 3: Jimmy Butler - Trim Your Tree

hey it's time to get that x-mas tree..! we're getting a real live one this year. wait.. did he just say "sprinkle my snow"..? HEY this is a dirty song! Jimmy Butler, you dog...!

This is from a sweet blues comp, "Blues, Blues Christmas (1925 - 1955)" ... highly recommended.

Wednesday, December 2, 2009

DAY 2: The Lickity-Splits - You Set My Christmas Tree on Fire

THIS is a great tune. I don't know much about The Lickity-Splits.. This song was recorded for a Suburban Sprawl x-mas comp in 2006.

I am not sure if they ever got this out on vinyl. If not, they really should..! If you like "shoo-wops" and old rock & rolly piano, you will dig this. Enjoy!

DAY 1: The Swingin' Neckbreakers - Santa Claus Ain't Comin' This Year

OKAY.. First, the bad news. Santa Claus Ain't Comin This Year. At least, that's what THE SWINGIN' NECKBREAKERS are here to say.

Lucky for you, you're going to be getting FREE, awesome music from ME for the next 25 days. I don't even care if you been naughty. In fact, I prefer it.

These guys are just killer, balls out garage. The song comes from a special x-mas 45 they put out in 1999:

We actually played a show with these guys, back in July of '07 as part of the TRASHFEST at the Abbey Lounge (RIP)... :

This was one of our 1st few shows... There was free beer for the entire hour leading right up until when we were supposed to play. Needless to say, we got wasted. We played a really shitty, sloppy set, and I believe this is the (first) time we broke up on stage. I don't remember staying for the end of the show to see the Neckbreakers...

anyways. listen to it and/or download here:
